Gerald
Mitchell, coffee house owner, restaurant owner, bar owner – and
he does it all out of his “Garage” – Capitol
Garage that is.
Born
in Southern California, Gerald, or Jerry as most know him,
made a decision in 1990 to move to Northern California; that
decision led him to the Capital City – Sacramento. Soon
after Jerry got settled, he would open a small deli-café on
L and 15th. Jerry knew he had a diamond in the rough – his
new restaurant, Capitol Garage, was in a prime downtown location
and the possibilities were endless. It wouldn’t take
long before he would set the wheels in motion to capture every
person as a potential customer that walked past his Capitol
Garage restaurant. Recognizing his dreams for the future of
Capitol Garage would benefit from a partner, Jerry brought
in one of his hometown friends, John Lopez. Together they would
reconstruct Capitol Garage from the top to the bottom until
it fit their vision – a cutting edge, all in one, relaxed
atmosphere with great food and great drinks – a full
scale restaurant and entertainment venue that caters as well.
Capitol
Garage restaurant is one of downtown Sacramento’s few
mainstays. While downtown has watched restaurants come and
go as it has evolved and grown into a more popular scene in
Sacramento, Capitol Garage has successfully managed to stay
in touch with their customer base for 15 years this October.
It is not unusual to see Capitol Garage buzzing with hungry
customers lured by the enticing smells pouring out of their
kitchen and into the streets of downtown; or the club packed
with a line out the door in the evenings with people waiting
to see the latest live performance.
Celebrating Capitol Garage’s 15 year anniversary this October, the owners
credit their longevity and success to their commitment to their customers and
the quality of the food and the environment around them. In the past 15 years,
behind the creative genius of Jerry and John, Capitol Garage has evolved into
more than your ordinary café or even night spot for that matter. Hosting
coffee and breakfast in the morning; catering to the ever growing downtown
lunch crowd every afternoon; creating a “let go of the day” happy
hour experience with appetizers and drink specials weekly; to a relaxed dinner
spot which eventually turns into a nightclub with live entertainment – Capitol
Garage manages to cater to a variety of customers daily. As if that were not
enough, every Sunday, Capitol Garage’s Executive Chef Jonathan Clemons
creates a mouthwatering champagne brunch and works daily to keep Capitol Garage’s
dessert display filled with house made delights! To say these two owners have
their hands full would be the understatement of the year!
So
what now? How about a little wine tasting…
As
the owners mark Capitol Garage Restaurant’s 15th year
in business this October, they will once again embark upon
something new – wine tasting.
The owners spent months sampling wines up and down the northern coast. Their
goal? To find a wine they felt would best suit their customers’ tastes.
With the introduction of their new wine selection from Ste. Michelle, Executive
Chef Jonathan Clemons created a new dinner menu that will enhance the flavor
of their wine choice; as well as provide evening dining to its already loyal
breakfast and lunch crowd.
The
owners vow to never become complacent with Capitol Garage.
They will continue to evolve and stay in touch with their ever
growing loyal customer base.
